Reading list for designers

Books are great resources they distill and convey an authors years of experience into nuggets of wisdom that you can take away from. This post shares a recommended reading list for designers. Of course there a bunch more books out there that are incredible but these are the ones I refer back to the most. I hope you find these books useful as I have.

Design – Fundamentals

The Elements of Typographic style by Robert Bringhurst

Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Müller-Brockmann

Design – Stylistic

Designing News by Francesco Franchi

The Intelligent Lifestyle Magazine by Francesco Franchi

New Perspectives in Typography by Scott Willams & Henrik Kubel

Design – Journeys

How to Use Graphic Design to Sell Things... by Michael Beirut

How they got there by Khoi Vinh

Millionaire Fastlane by MJ Demarco

Title sounds like a horrible get rich quick scheme book, but don’t be fooled it's actually a great read.

4 hour work week by Tim Ferris

Tim Ferris is a polarising figure and I don’t love everything about this book but there is a lot I do like. When I first read it, it definitely opened up my mind and point of view.

How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie

Great book on building soft skills which are critical if you want to be a designer that can hold their own in meetings and empower others.

The monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma

Seems contradictory and definitely not for everyone. But I love the lessons that are derived from this book, finding meaning and taking a look at the big picture.

Happy reading everyone and I hope you enjoy these books as much as I did.
